Glossary

Glomeruli: These are a group of blood capillaries at the tip of the nephron that filters the blood to form urine. The nephron is a tube in the kidney.

Mesangium: The mesangium is surrounded by the glomerular capillaries. The mesangium and the glomeruli are contained in the basement membrane within the kidney.

Autoimmune disorders: In autoimmune disorders, the immune system attacks its own body cells by recognizing them as foreign.

Immunosuppressant: These are drugs that suppress the effect of the immune system and are used to treat autoimmune diseases.
