Malaria transmission

How is malaria transmitted?

Malaria is a communicable disease caused by the parasite plasmodium. Four species of the plasmodium parasite cause malaria. They are:

  • Plasmodium vivax
  • Plasmodium malariae
  • Plasmodium ovale
  • Plasmodium falciparum

It is spread to humans by the bite of an infected female anopheles mosquito. Traveling to mosquito- prone areas increases the risk of contracting the disease.

Female mosquitoes are concerned with the transmission of plasmodium whereas male mosquitoes feed only on fruit juices.
