Treatment and Prognosis

Treatment
No specific treatment exists for McArdle disease. Exercise endurance may be increased by a high-protein diet. Regular and moderate exercise is recommended to improve exercise capacity. Rhabdomyolysis and related complications can be prevented by the avoidance of strenuous exercise. Oral sucrose administration before exercise may improve symptoms in patients with McArdle disease. Some patients benefit from creatine and vitamin B6 supplementation, which improve muscle function.
Prognosis
McArdle disease is a chronic condition. It is not fatal.
Prevention
McArdle disease is a genetic disorder that is hereditary. Genetic counselling is advised to individuals with the disease.
