A: Abortion pill contains two pills namely, Mifepristone and Misoprostol. First pill is taken right away in the clinic and second pill is taken within 24-48 hours after taking the first pill. You can expect cramping, abdominal pain and bleeding 5-6 hours after taking the second pill. You can also feel dizzy and nauseous. Some amount of bleeding might be present until four weeks after taking the abortion pill. You need to get a follow up ultrasound to check completion of abortion, within two weeks after taking the abortion pill.

Q: How long does it take to recover from an abortion?

A: It takes two weeks to completely recover from an abortion. Bleeding and cramping might slow down within 2-3 days after an abortion, but slight bleeding or spotting and breast tenderness can be present until two weeks after an abortion.

Q: What could be the cause for heavy bleeding and fever after an abortion?

A: Heavy bleeding with passing of clots and fever is a sign of infection. Infection can happen due to retained products of conception or damage to the uterus (perforation of the uterus) with surgical methods of abortion or with history of sexually transmitted diseases.
