Multifactorial Birth Defects - Cleft Lip

Cleft Lip

Many commonly refer to cleft lip as ‘hare lip’. The condition was given this name because the hare has a divided upper lip. The incidence of the condition is one in 1,000 births.

The condition is more common in males. It can be unilateral (involving one side of the lip) or bilateral (involvement of both sides). The defect may be similar or dissimilar with varying degrees of deformity on each side.
