What Are the Possible Causes of Nocturnal Leg Cramps?
Nocturnal leg cramps mostly occur for no known reason. But the following causes can be associated with this painful condition.
- Insufficient water intake – Water is important for transporting vitamins and minerals in the body. Water hydrates the body. Excessive intake of caffeinated drinks or alcohol dehydrates the body and hydration is important for the muscles to function properly. Therefore, low water intake can cause leg cramps.
- Mineral deficiencies – Low levels of calcium, potassium and magnesium can cause muscle cramps. Potassium serves as an electrolyte and helps balance the body’s fluid levels. Considered the most important mineral regarding muscle activity, potassium also plays an important role in muscle control. Calcium deficiency causes muscle tremors and twitching, and is responsible for nocturnal leg cramps.
- Sitting improperly for a long period – If the muscles do not get a chance to stretch from time to time, nocturnal leg cramping may occur.
- Over exertion of the muscles may sometimes cause nocturnal leg cramping.(2✔ ✔Trusted Source
