Causes for Ovulation pain

The exact cause for ovulation pain is unknown. However, following theories have been suggested:

  • The growing follicle may stretch the membrane of the ovary, causing the pain.
  • The bursting of the mature follicle may release small amounts of fluid and blood that may irritate the abdominal lining and may cause pain.
  • The fallopian tube may experience spasm during the time of ovulation and may cause pain.

Ovulation pain can be relieved to some extent by placing a heat pad on the abdomen, taking a long warm bath, relaxing or taking a nap. If the pain is severe, you need to see a doctor to rule out other health problems. The doctor may prescribe a painkiller or an oral contraceptive to treat the pain.
