Conclusion
Parasomnias aggravate with stress, therefore, stress- busting lifestyle changes are recommended for all adults
Parasomnias tend to crop up at the extremes of life where the sleep-wake cycles are struggling to establish themselves. Once the child reaches adolescence and his sleep wake cycles are firmly established they tend to disappear. The same applies for the elderly with the difference that they tend to worsen with time as the degenerative process sets in.
Parasomnias appear to occur more frequently when a person is exposed to stressful situations. There may be a subconscious loss of sleep-wakefulness regulation and this may result in breakthrough of the dormant parasomnia state. To prevent this happening we have to ensure that the internal clock of the body is not tampered by stressful situations.
Stress is the norm of today’s modern lifestyle. A child has pressures to excel in class, adults have to compete with their colleagues at work place, and the elderly may have to cope with their medical conditions. As these situations cannot be changed, the only way to cope is to change one’s attitude and learn not to let the stress affect us at the emotional level. An attitude of acceptance of the situation helps to overcome it.
