Periodic Limb Movement Disorder - Incidence

The incidence of Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD increases with age - it occurs in 5% of people between age 30 to 50 years and in 44% of people over the age of 65 years.

Periodic Limb Movement Disorder occurs in both the children and in the adults. The chances of developing the disorder increases with age, making it common among the elderly. The incidence of PLMD increases with age.

On an average PLMD affects 5% of people between the age of 30 to 50years and 44% of people above the age of 65 years. 12.2% of insomniacs and 3.5% of individuals suffering from excessive daytime sleepiness are likely to experience PLMD.

No difference has been observed in the rate of occurrence between males and females.

The family pattern or the genetics of the disorder has not been studied in detail. Approximately 80% of people with Restless legs syndrome (RLS) have PLMD, while most people with PLMD do not experience RLS.
