Diagnosis of Peritoneal Cancer
Peritoneal cancer is diagnosed using radiological tests such as CT scan and MRI.
Fluid for Cytology - In addition, the accumulated fluid in the abdomen due to the tumor called ascitic fluid may be aspirated from the abdomen with the help of a syringe and needle and tested for cancer cells.
Laparoscopy- The surgeon may also visualize the peritoneal cavity directly with the patient under anesthesia using an instrument called a laparoscope. He may obtain a biopsy during the procedure to diagnose the type of cancer and whether it arose from the peritoneum or spread from other parts of the body. Peritoneal cancers should be differentiated from other conditions such as tuberculosis.
Endoscopy and colonoscopy may be carried out to check for tumors of the digestive tract such as stomach and colon cancer.
