Malformations of the Ear

Malformations of the Ear

There are various ear deformities ranging from small notch on the ear lobule, absence of a part of ear, crooked shape of ear, total or near total absence of ear (microtia). Microtia may be associated with problems of middle or internal ear, facial deformities and often with kidney malformation.

Though ear is completely absent and there is no hole, child still has some hearing left on that side. These patients will have approximately 40% hearing on the affected side. If only one ear is affected, then child may not need any hearing aid. However, if both ears are affected then he may need hearing aids to improve hearing

For any child with crooked ear or prominent ears, the treatment can be started by moulding ears within few days of birth. Results are not good if started later than 3 months.

Surgery of ear anomaly is usually done after 5 years. However, in some case minimal correction may be necessary early. Prominent ears and crooked ear can be corrected by 5-6 years of age. For total or near total absence of ear (microtia), surgery is delayed till 8-9 years for two reasons. Firstly, the size of ear at this age is nearly reaches the adult size. Secondly, the size of cartilage of chest (ribs) has developed into good size, which is use for the ear reconstruction.
