Glossary

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): A digestive disorder where acid from the stomach regurgitates up into the lower end of the esophagus or food pipe.

Adenoids: A lymphatic tissue located in the throat, near the back of the nose.

Nasal Polyp: Fleshy swellings or growth in the lining of the nose and along the sinuses. They are not cancerous.

Deviated Septum: A special cartilage and bone structure called the septum divide the nose cavity into a half. When there is a deviation in the septum to one side that results in the unequal division of the nasal cavity, the condition is called deviated nasal septum.

Eustachian Tube: A tube-like passage that connects the pharynx (back of the throat) to the cavity of the middle ear. This passage helps maintain the pressure between the external and the middle ear.

Sinusitis: Sinuses of the head are hollow cavities in the skull that open up into the nose. Sinuses have mucus lining and drain into the nasal cavity. When the mucus lining gets infected, the condition is called sinusitis.

Occupational Asthma: Inflammation of the airways and the consequent obstruction and bronchospasm caused by an allergen or infection at the workplace environment is called occupational asthma.

Nasal Irrigation: The procedure of washing the nasal cavity to flush out excess mucus and debris from nose and sinuses.

Rhinitis: Inflammation of the nasal lining resulting in excessive mucus secretion.
