When to do a Lipid profile?
When to do a lipid profile is decided based on if a person has the following risk factors for developing heart disease-
These risk factors include -
- Cigarette smoking
- Diabetes
- A history of heart disease, or atherosclerosis, that is blockage of any other arteries in the body like having suffered from stroke or heart attack
- If there is family history of heart disease. Particularly in male family members before the age of 50 years or female family members before the age of 60 years has had heart disease
- High blood pressure

FOR MEN -
WITHOUT RISK FACTORS FOR HEART DISEASE | WITH RISK FACTORS FOR HEART DISEASE |
Men aged 35 years and above should test their Lipid Profile | Men aged 20-35 years should test their Lipid Profile |
FOR WOMEN -
WITHOUT RISK FACTORS FOR HEART DISEASE | WITH RISK FACTORS FOR HEART DISEASE |
There are no regulations for women aged 20 years and older without risk factors for heart disease to test their Lipid Profile | All women aged 20-45 years, as well as 45 years and older with risk factors for heart disease should test their Lipid Profile |
Children should first get tested between the ages of 9-11 years, then after every 5 years. However, if there is a family history of high blood cholesterol, heart disease or stroke they may have to be tested from the age of 2 years.
