Prevention and Safety Measures
Patient and the bed partner need to be educated about safety measures to prevent injury during an attack of REM Behavior Disorder (RBD).
The recommended safety measures are:
- A ground floor bedroom is preferable, especially for people who actually leave the bed during an episode.
- Ensure that the doors and windows are properly secured.
- Clear the floor and the area around the bed of any sharp objects.
- Padding the bedrails and nearby furniture can be considered.
- Sleeping in a big bed can minimize the chance that a sleeping partner will be injured.
- The bedmate should sleep in another bed until the symptoms resolve.
