REM Behavior Disorder - Symptoms

Symptoms

The main symptom of REM sleep behavior disorder is dream-enacting behavior, which can range from simple limb twitches to more complex movements.

The features of REM Behavior Disorder (RBD) are:

  • The body can become rigid and extremely tense during episodes of RBD.
  • The attacks are triggered by dreams that involve violent activity such as fighting, dancing, running, chasing, or attacking.
  • In the process they can injure their bed partners.
  • RBD activity is usually confined to the bed and the surrounding area.
  • But some people have been known to leave the bed, run into a wall, run through a window, or run down the stairs.
  • People with RBD typically remember little or nothing of this activity unless the person wakes up spontaneously during the attack.

They however usually remember and tell the dreams they were having during an episode.
