Types of Retinal Detachment

Types

Depending on the pathophysiology or mechanism of retinal separation retinal detachment can be divided into:

  1. Rhegmatogenous
  2. Tractional
  3. Exudative

It is important to diagnose which type of retinal detachment the patient is suffering from as the treatment of each varies. For eg:

  • Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment requires sealing of the hole or tear.
Retinopathy Detachment Types
  • Tractional retinal detachment is treated by removal of the traction, usually fibrous bands seen in end stages of diabetic retinopathy.
  • Exudative retinal detachment requires treating the cause of exudation like tuberculosis or tumors.
