Types
Depending on the pathophysiology or mechanism of retinal separation retinal detachment can be divided into:
- Rhegmatogenous
- Tractional
- Exudative
It is important to diagnose which type of retinal detachment the patient is suffering from as the treatment of each varies. For eg:
- Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment requires sealing of the hole or tear.
- Tractional retinal detachment is treated by removal of the traction, usually fibrous bands seen in end stages of diabetic retinopathy.
- Exudative retinal detachment requires treating the cause of exudation like tuberculosis or tumors.
