Prevention of Reye's Syndrome
Avoid salicylates (drugs like aspirin) in children unless conditions like Kawasaki disease make their use mandatory. Studies have found that children treated with aspirin for Kawasaki disease rarely get Reye's syndrome. The following ingredients indicate that the drug contains a salicylate:
- acetylsalicylate
- acetylsalicylic acid
- salicylic acid
- salicylate
Recognition of early symptoms is a must. Early evaluation and treatment of Inborn Errors of Metabolism can prevent Reye like syndrome. Influenza and chicken pox vaccines are recommended for children.
