Dry mouth (xerostomia) is a common complication in people who underwent radiation therapy. Having a dry mouth is very uncomfortable. It causes difficulty eating, swallowing and speaking. Another problem is the frequent infections in mouth that it causes.
The following recommendations may help you to cope with a dry mouth:
- Gently brush your teeth several times each day using a soft-bristled toothbrush
- Rinse your mouth with a mild solution of warm water and salt after each meal
- Drink plenty of water. Another method of keep your mouth moistened is to use sugarless gum or sugarless candies. These stimulate your mouth to produce saliva
- Avoid dry foods. Acidic or spicy foods and drinks must also be avoided. Other items to be avoided are caffeinated and alcoholic beverages.
