Second Trimester - Related Sleep Disturbances
Sleep is disturbed in the second Trimester due to:
- Heartburn: Due to the enlarging uterus, the diaphragm is restricted, and breathing becomes more shallow. The intestines and esophageal sphincter are displaced causing esophageal reflux and complaints of heartburn, particularly in a supine sleep position leading to disturbed sleep.
- Nightmares: About 72% of pregnant women experienced frightening dreams or nightmares. Dreams became increasingly frightening as pregnancy advances.
