Sinusitis - Glossary

Glossary

Abscess: A collection of pus within a tissue, usually as a result of infection.

Meninges: The three membranous envelopes that cover the brain. The three layers are called pia mater, arachnoid mater and dura mater.

Nasal Polyps: Fleshy swellings that develop in the lining of the nose and paranasal sinuses. These growths are non-cancerous.

Eustachian Tube: The tube that connects the middle ear and the back of the nose, draining the middle ear and regulating air pressure.

Periorbital Cellulitis: Inflammation and infection of the eyelid and skin around the eyes.

Mastoid Process: Round, honeycombed bony prominence located behind the ear.

Maxilla: Upper jaw bone.

Saline Water: A solution of salt and distilled water.

Nasal Irrigation: A procedure in which water is forced into one nostril and let out through the other to flush out excess mucus and debris from the nose.
