Classification of Sleep Disorders - Hypersomnia

Hypersomnia is an excessive amount of sleepiness that incapacitates the victim’s ability to keep awake, often at inappropriate times such as at work, during a meal, or during a conversation.

This could jeopardize the victim’s work and family life.

This condition may be genetic or it could be the result of other sleep disorders, such as narcolepsy or sleep apnea.

Adolescents and youth are in the risk category for this disorder.

Symptoms of hypersomnias include-

  • Excessively deep and prolonged sleep period
  • Hallucination
  • Appetite loss
  • Slow thinking
  • Memory problems
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation

Treatment of hypersomnias includes-

  • Stimulant medications
