Glossary

Acromion: It is a bony process on the scapula. It hooks over anteriorly, as a continuation of scapular spine.

Arthrogram: It is a test that uses X- rays to obtain a series of images of the joint, after a contrast being injected into the joint.

Capsulitis: It is the inflammation of the capsule. Capsule is connective tissue that surrounds the glenohumeral joint. Inflammation in the capsule leads to stiffness and restriction of motion in the joint.

Bursa: It is fluid filled sac that is present in joint spaces for smooth gliding and reducing friction.

Bursitis: Inflammation of the bursa.

Dislocation: Displacement of one or more bones at a joint.

Elbow: It is the middle portion of the upper extremity formed by long bones namely humerus, radius and ulna.

Elbow joint: It is a hinge joint formed where the humerus meets the radius and ulna. This joint enables forward, backward, outward and inward movements of the arm.

Epicondyle: These are tubercular eminences that are present at the end of humerus, with lateral epicondyle attaching to radial collateral ligament and medial epicondyle attaching to ulnar collateral ligament.

Fracture: A break in the bone.

Golfers elbow: Pain caused by damage to the tendons that bends the wrist toward the palm.

Humerus: It is the long bone in the arm that runs from the shoulder to the elbow.

Impingement: Impingement in this article refers to irritation of the rotator cuff muscle tendons, while they pass through the subacromial space.

Joint: Where the ends of two or more bones meet.

MRI Scan: Magnetic resonance imaging technique is used to produce high resolution images with minute details using radiowaves, magnetism and computer.

Rotator cuff: It is a group of four muscle and tendons that stabilize the shoulder joint. The four muscles are supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor and subscapularis.

Tendon: Fibrous tissue by which muscle attaches to the bone.

Tendinitis: Inflammation of the tendon.

Radius: The shorter bone in the forearm on the thumb side.
