Prevention
Proper protection from the sun-rays and awareness about early changes suggestive of squamous cell cancer could help in prevention and early detection of the condition.
The following tips may be followed to prevent the development of squamous cell cancer:
- Ultraviolet radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancers. Excessive exposure to sun should be avoided especially around noon. When unavoidable, the skin should be protected from direct exposure to sunlight. A sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater may also be used.
- People especially white skinned individuals who are more susceptible to the cancer should be educated about the risk factors for developing skin cancers.
- People over the age of 40 years should undergo regular skin examinations and be advised about how to detect cancerous changes in a skin lesion at the earliest.
