What are the Symptoms and Signs of Superior Canal Dehiscence?

The major symptoms of SCD are related to balance and hearing. These are listed below:

  • Vertigo, which is a sudden spinning sensation that can result from quick movement of the head
  • Loud sounds or straining (e.g. coughing, lifting heavy objects) causes dizziness
  • Sensation of movement of stationary objects (oscillopsia)
  • Tinnitus, which is a ringing or buzzing sound felt in one or both ears that can be persistent or intermittent
  • Eye movement in the opposite direction during straining
  • Ability to hear own eyes moving or blinking
  • Echo of one’s own voice in the ear (autophony)
  • Loud sound in the ear when tuning a fork is kept on the ankle
  • Ability to hear the click of the vertebrae in the neck or bowel movements
  • Footsteps sound very loud
  • Chewing and belching sounds are very loud
