What are the Symptoms and Signs of Superior Canal Dehiscence?
The major symptoms of SCD are related to balance and hearing. These are listed below:
- Vertigo, which is a sudden spinning sensation that can result from quick movement of the head
- Loud sounds or straining (e.g. coughing, lifting heavy objects) causes dizziness
- Sensation of movement of stationary objects (oscillopsia)
- Tinnitus, which is a ringing or buzzing sound felt in one or both ears that can be persistent or intermittent
- Eye movement in the opposite direction during straining
- Ability to hear own eyes moving or blinking
- Echo of one’s own voice in the ear (autophony)
- Loud sound in the ear when tuning a fork is kept on the ankle
- Ability to hear the click of the vertebrae in the neck or bowel movements
- Footsteps sound very loud
- Chewing and belching sounds are very loud
