Symptoms of Ebola Virus Disease

Symptoms of Ebola include fever and body pain, but quickly progress to severe distress and ultimately shock.

A patient with Ebola viral infection presents with the following features:

  • Symptoms of fever, headache, loss of appetite and body pain suddenly appear in the patient.
  • Nausea, sore throat, stomach ache, and diarrhoea add up to the distress as the disease progresses.
  • Disseminated intravascular coagulation, a disorder in which the proteins that control blood clotting become over active, is a serious complication of Ebola virus disease.
  • By five to seven days, profuse bleeding occurs from multiple sites such as eyes, nose, mouth, rectum and gums.

  • Internal bleeding can also happen, resulting in shock and respiratory distress.
  • Death can occur between 7 to 16 days.

Sometimes the symptoms present as severe headaches, confusion, depression or agitation, seizures or coma indicating that the involvement of central nervous system.
