Treatment of Osteosarcoma
Adjuvant chemotherapy can help in controlling recurrence and surgery with limb salvage can be done instead of amputation when indicated.
Surgical removal with limb sparing procedures are done along with preoperative and postoperative chemotherapy for the treatment of osteosarcoma. Some of the surgical procedures used include-
- Disarticulation of the affected limb
- Amputation of the affected limb.
Powerful chemotherapy drugs have revolutionised the treatment of osteosarcoma. Commencing chemotherapy before operative treatment can restrict the spread and also increase the chances of performing a limb salvage therapy instead of amputation on the affected limb.
