Treatment of Von Recklinghausen’s Disease / Neurofibromatosis Type 1
Most patients with Von Recklinghausen's disease do not require treatment. Some conditions are painful and disfiguring and surgical excision is done in them. Similarly tumors within the spinal cord and brain are corrected surgically. Consultation with the following specialties may be required:
- Orthopedic physicians: To correct bony deformities like bowing of tibia (shin bone), scoliosis and other bone deformities.
- Neuro-surgeons: To surgically treat neurofibromas in brain or spinal cord.
- Ophthalmologists: For treating intra-ocular gliomas and other types of tumors affecting the eyes.
- Plastic surgeons: To deal with facial deformities.
- Psychological or psychiatric assessment: For monitoring language disorders and learning difficulties.
