Risk factors

Generally, East African trypanosomiasis is restricted to the regions of Woodland and Savannah. The people who work in the game parks of East and Central Africa are especially prone to this disease.

West African trypanosomiasis is generally found in areas with thick vegetation and undergrowth. Waterholes are found to be a hotbed for the spread of this infection. Further, getting bitten often by the tsetse fly enhances the risk of infection contracting several manifold.

Chagas disease proves to be a risk in poverty stricken areas where people mostly live in hutments. The disease is rampant in parts of Central and South America. Those, whose immune systems are weak, are prone to the disease leaving them with many complications.
