Vaginal Bleeding - Diagnosis

The following are some of the tests advised for a woman with abnormal bleeding:-

  • A physical exam involving the breasts, pelvic area and thyroids
  • A pregnancy test in ovulating women
  • A PAP smear test to rule out cervical cancer
  • A microscopic examination of vaginal swabs to rule out infections
  • A blood count to rule out premature menopause, anemia, liver and kidney functions
  • Hormonal tests for Polycystic Ovaries and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
  • A pelvic ultrasound depending on the medical history may be carried out
  • In women over 40 years with persistent bleeding endometrial sampling / biopsy may be carried out
