Vaginal Bleeding - During Pregnancy

It has been reported that up to 30% of pregnant women experience a certain degree of vaginal bleeding while pregnant. It occurs more in a woman pregnant with multiple gestations, such as twins.

Vaginal bleeding is more common in the early stages of pregnancy when the usual periods are expected. This bleeding is known as "implantation bleeding."

The cause of vaginal bleeding during pregnancy is determined by:-

  • Stage of pregnancy
  • Quantity of bleeding
  • Associated symptoms

Bleeding during pregnancy need not indicate a problem, nevertheless it must be evaluated by a doctor.

Some of the common causes include:-

  • Miscarriage
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Polyp or growth
  • Infection
  • Medications
  • Premature labor
