Vaginitis - Treatment
The treatment of vaginitis depends on the type and severity of the vaginal discharge
Candidiasis (Yeast Infection) - The drugs commonly used are the antifungals like:-
- Nystatin vaginal tablet, one tablet for 14 days,
- Clotrimazole 1% cream 5 g intravaginally for 7-14 days or Clotrimazole (100 mg) vaginal tablet for 7 days.
- Miconazole (200 mg) vaginal suppository, one suppository for 3 days.
- Fluconazole 150 mg oral tablet, one tablet in single dose
Trichomoniasis - The drugs commonly used are:-
- Metronidazole (500mg twice daily x 5days) or Metronidazole 2 g orally in a single dose. Patients should be advised to avoid consuming alcohol during treatment with metronidazole.
- Tinidazole 2 g orally in a single dose can also be given as an alternative therapy. Both partners should be treated.
Bacterial Vaginosis - The drug commonly used is:-
- Metronidazole 500 mg orally twice a day for 7 days. Consumption of alcohol should be avoided during treatment.
Postmenopausal Vaginitis
- Estrogen therapy that can be given as vaginal suppositories or vaginal creams.
