Clinical features of von Willebrand's Disease
von Willebrand disease is a congenital bleeding disorder and can be diagnosed at any age. Most patients with vWD have mild disease that may go undiagnosed until trauma or surgery occurs.
Symptoms include:
- Easy bruisability
- Mucosal surface bleeding: epistaxis (bleeding from the nose), gastrointestinal bleeding (bleeding from digestive tract), menorrhagia (Abnormally heavy or prolonged menstruation), bleeding of the gums
- Postoperative bleeding (particularly after tonsillectomy or tooth extractions)
Trauma, surgery, or tooth extractions may result in life-threatening bleeding in severely affected individuals
People with mild form of vWD may remain undiagnosed into adulthood. The use of drugs like
