Clinical features of von Willebrand's Disease

Clinical features of von Willebrand's Disease

von Willebrand disease is a congenital bleeding disorder and can be diagnosed at any age. Most patients with vWD have mild disease that may go undiagnosed until trauma or surgery occurs.

Symptoms include:

  • Easy bruisability
  • Mucosal surface bleeding: epistaxis (bleeding from the nose), gastrointestinal bleeding (bleeding from digestive tract), menorrhagia (Abnormally heavy or prolonged menstruation), bleeding of the gums
  • Postoperative bleeding (particularly after tonsillectomy or tooth extractions)

Trauma, surgery, or tooth extractions may result in life-threatening bleeding in severely affected individuals

People with mild form of vWD may remain undiagnosed into adulthood. The use of drugs like aspirin or NSAIDs with anti–platelet effects may result in symptoms.
