Functions of Cholesterol

Cholesterol is an important component of cell membranes and some hormones, and serves other several bodily functions.

The functions of cholesterol are as follows -

  • Cholesterol is necessary for the formation and maintenance of cell membranes (helps the cell to resist changes in temperature and protects and insulates nerve fibers).
  • It is involved in the production of sex hormones (estrogen and androgens).
  • It is essential for the production of hormones released by the adrenal glands (cortisol, corticosterone, aldosterone and others).
  • It is necessary for production of bile, which help to digest food.
  • It is important for synthesis of vitamin D.
  • It plays a vital role in the metabolism of the fat soluble-vitamins A, D, E and K.
