This is a disease which requires treatment for all your life. The treatment requires drugs to remove and prevent re-accumulation of copper deposits. The first choice is of the use of Zinc salt, which blocks the absorption of copper in the stomach, with only mild side effects. Therefore it is the first choice of physicians.
Anti-Copper Drugs
- Zinc salt - It blocks the absorption of copper in the stomach with only mild side effects.
- Penicillamine - Increases urinary excretion of copper but does have some serious side effects.
- Trientine - Increases urinary excretion of copper but does have some serious side effects.
- Tetrathiomolybdate is a drug that still needs to be approved and is still under investigation and has less toxicity.
Drugs to treat Symptoms of the Disease:-
- Levodopa
- Baclofen
- Clonazepam
- Tizanidine
- Anticholinergics
Diet and Nutrition
Food with low-copper should be eaten. Foods to avoid are listed below:-
- Chocolates
- Mushrooms
- Dried fruits
- Nuts
- Shellfish
