Q: Which doctor should I consult if my child is suspected to have ambiguous genitals?

A: You should first consult a pediatrician, who may get a genetist involved. The surgery itself is done by an andrologist.

Q: Can XY females become pregnant?

A: Women with 46,XY with complete gonadal dysgenesis and 46,XY with disorder of sex development who have uterus and fallopian tubes may become pregnant like a surrogate mother by egg donation from another person.

Males with 46,XY DSD can try and seek help of intracytoplasmic sperm insemination (ICSI) and possibly donate sperms if present and help their partners in becoming pregnant.

Q: Does Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) help in normal development of teenagers?

A: Yes. HRT should not be discontinued. With this treatment young teenagers develop normal female attributes such as the development of breasts, axillary and pubic hair and regular menstrual cycles. However, they are infertile.

Q: What are the risks of siblings or the children of XY females carrying the inheritance?

A: Once genetic testing is done risks can be explained better. There are some risks depending on the pattern of inheritance of the genes.
