Indications for Bone Marrow Biopsy

A bone marrow aspiration and biopsy procedure is done to evaluate the bone marrow function and manage certain types of leukemia and anemia.

Bone marrow biopsy is done for-

  • Diagnosing the cause of abnormal types or numbers of red or white blood cells or platelets on a complete blood count (CBC).
  • Diagnose leukemia, certain infections and some types of anemia. These medical conditions are called -
  • chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
  • Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma
  • hairy cell leukemia
  • myeloproliferative disorders

  • myelodysplatic syndrome
  • and multiple myeloma
  • Diagnose tumors and evaluate of the effectiveness of chemotherapy.
  • Monitor treatment for certain types of blood disorders.

Bone marrow culture and sensitivity test is done to see-

  • If a bacterial, viral or fungal infection is present and to identify antibiotics that might be appropriate for treating the infection.
