Diet for Struvite Stones
Struvite stones are formed due to urinary tract bacterial infections. The common organisms include – Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis.
The most common treatment for these stones is a long course of antibiotics depending on the sensitivity of the bacteria. Ask your doctor about dietary changes that help to ease the side effects of long-term antibiotic use. Struvite stones have a higher chance of recurring unless the infection is completely eradicated.
Struvite stones tend to form when the pH of the urine is abnormally high or alkaline due to breakdown of urea into ammonical salts by the infecting bacteria.
If you are a Struvite Stone former you may modify your diet to increase the acidity of your urine to inhibit the bacterial growth. Urine acidifiers include specific tablets, animal proteins and citrus fruits.
