Craze for Dieting
There are probably countless such stories and theories, like the one mentioned above related to dieting and weight loss over the years, however only in the recent past people have actually started understanding the relationship between eating, gaining weight and losing weight.
Some of the popular reasons for loosing weight may be:
- The misconception that losing weight enhances one’s self image.
- Reducing weight for a special occasion such as one’s wedding.
- Due to certain medical conditions requiring a change in food habits.
- To avoid discrimination and teasing by fellow workers.
Dieting is ironically one of the major causes for weight gain. Suddenly reducing ones food intake immediately triggers our body to hold on to the fat as a natural response, this in turn slows down one’s body’s metabolism rate to conserve as much energy as possible.
"The wise man should consider that health is the greatest of human blessings. Let food be your medicine." – Hippocrates
Such crash diets do have very positive results initially, but it is because our body is programmed in such a way, that it breaks down muscle and looses water in order to preserve fat. Thus the weight lost eventually is not fat after all.. and even when one does decide to eat normally a major portion of the food eaten is stored as fat in the body so as to have enough fat reserves, incase one decides to go on a crash diet again in the future .
Although there are numerous methods of loosing weight to tailor to every individuals specific needs ranging from diet regimens to diet supplements to prescription drugs and external devices, there is no one “quick fix” or long term solution.
So the next time you consider a new diet technique - PLEASE WEIGH THE PROS AND CONS CAREFULLY.
