Glossary

Blood Pressure: The pressure of the blood on the walls of the arteries, dependent on the energy of the heart action, the elasticity of the walls of the arteries, and the volume and viscosity (resistance) of the blood.

Kidney disease: Any one of several chronic conditions that are caused by damage to the cells of the kidney. People who have had diabetes for a long time may have kidney damage. Also called nephropathy.

Osteoporosis: A disease in which bones become thin, weak and are easily fractured.

Sodium (Na): A mineral that is essential in maintaining the fluid balance of the body. Table salt (sodium chloride) is nearly half sodium.
