Products of Soya or Soy
The Soya bean is one of the most versatile crops. It can be transformed into several avatars including whole beans, soya nuts or soya sprouts. It can be processed to make soy milk, chips, textured soy protein, tofu, tempeh, soya sauce, miso, soya bean oil, soy yogurt, soya flour etc.
It can also be used as bio-diesel. It can also be made into candles, which burn longer and are healthier.
Soy Yogurt: When soy milk is fermented using friendly bacteria the resultant product is soy yogurt. Soy yogurt is considered as a probiotic food. Soy contains the carbohydrates raffinose and stachyose. These carbohydrates perform the function of natural probiotics. They stimulate the growth of Bifidobacterium the friendly bacterium in the large intestine.
Soy Nuts: The soya beans are fried or dry roasted to be eaten as a snack.
Soy Sprouts: Soya beans are sprouted and used either raw or cooked in salads and stir fried dishes.
Tempeh: This is a fermented product made from soya beans and is generally used as a substitute for meat in what are called mock sandwiches or burgers.
Miso: This is a fermented soya product of Japanese origin which is used to flavour salad dressings, soups and other dishes.
Soya Flour: This is the finely ground flour obtained when soya beans are milled. It is sold both as fatted and defatted flour.
Soya bean oil: It is used in many commercial products right from baked goods to salad dressings. It is used to make commercial margarines and other solid shortenings. Lecithin, one of the most commonly used emulsifiers is obtained from soy oil.
Tofu: Tofu is soya bean curd or soya paneer. It is one of the most popular soy products available and consumed.
