RDA and Chronic Degenerative Disease
Dr Ray D Strand after his years of research on whether or not to take nutritional supplements highlights important facts on the same.
According to him, ‘We health professionals assign more meaning to Recommended Dietary / Daily Allowance (RDA) standards than needed. This is definitely due to all product nutrition labels or multivitamins forming the percentage of RDA met as the benchmark for the evaluation of a product’.
After in-depth research on nutritional supplements, Dr Strand stands tall to conclude that “RDA’s have absolutely nothing to do with chronic degenerative disease”. After studying the medical literature on oxidative stress and the amount of nutrients needed to prevent it for seven long years he adds that “the level of nutritional supplementation should be significantly greater than the RDA levels”.
Below are a few examples:
Nutrient | RDA | Content of an average diet per day | When does one see health benefits (Optimal levels) |
Vit E | 10 to 30 IU | 8 to 10 IU | 400 IU |
Vit C | 40 to 60 mg | 30 to 60 mg if vitamin C rich sources are included | 1000 mg |
It is impossible to meet such high demands from just the consumption of foods rich in a particular nutrient.
Dr Strand therefore states that:
“If one wishes to decrease the risk of developing a chronic degenerative disease or empower the body to fight if not reverse chronic disease one has to supplement the diet in order to achieve the optimal levels of nutrients. Taking just a multivitamin cannot protect you from degenerative disease either.
Multivitamins are primarily based on the RDA’s. It is rare to see any reference in medical literature to a health benefit in patients who are simply taking a multivitamin. One has to take significant amounts of high quality antioxidants and minerals for any desire to prevent or slow down the chronic degenerative disease.
Plus today’s toxic world combined with a stressful lifestyle makes it imperative that our immune system and the antioxidant defense mechanism fires on all the cylinders.
Nutritional Supplementation is all about health and not disease”.
