Tips for supplementation
As a precautionary measure, women during their child-bearing years, as well as expecting mothers, are advised to consume folic acid, to the tune of 400 micrograms, on a daily basis in order to prevent neural tube defects. A multivitamin, containing 400 mcg of folic acid, is also advised for healthy adults for daily consumption.
Patients who suffer inadequate levels of folate arising out of alcoholism or hemolytic anemia ( where red blood cells are destroyed in great numbers) will be compensated if they consume upgraded doses of folic acid supplements in excess of 400 mcg/day.
