Vitamin C / Ascorbic acid - Deficiency Aftermath!
Deficiency of Vitamin C leads to scurvy. Symptoms arise due to weakening of collagen in the bones, tissues and blood vessels. This incapacitates the body’s capacity to heal naturally.. This also triggers loss of hair and tooth, swelling of joints, bleeding gums and tiredness.
The diagnosis of scurvy was first made in sailors as they were found to suffer from the above symptoms, while sailing. However, when their diet was supplemented with oranges and lemons, the condition improved.
Scurvy is uncommon in the developed nations, as fruits and vegetables that form part of normal household diet, contains sufficient quantities of Vitamin C. This is not the case in third world countries where scurvy still exists.
Ascorbic Acid and Vitamin C are not the same. They are two different things. Vitamin C is a much bigger molecule and contains many different constituents apart from Ascorbic Acid - Ascorbic acid is found within the Vitamin C complex. Vitamin C contains a number of inseparable cofactors, such as rutin, bioflavonoids, factor k, factor j, factor p, ascorbinogen, protein chaperones, and various enzymes like tyrosinase, which together in their entirety constitute the Vitamin C complex. So kindly do not equate Ascorbic Acid with Vitamin C. Vitamin C is extremely powerful yet completely harmless compound and can be used in mega doses beneficially against many prevailing deceases including Cancer, AIDS and Heart deceases. The same cannot be said of Ascorbic Acid though. Kalyankrisnan P
