Vitamin C is a generally safe vitamin. However, large doses may give rise to gastric trouble. It has been reported to cause kidney stones.

Further more, hemolysis (destruction of the red blood cells) may be seen in patients with an intrinsic G6PD enzyme (glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase) deficiency.
