When you consider the advantages of drinking green tea, the harmful effects are negligible by comparison. Insomnia is the only negative side effect reported from drinking green tea. It is due to the fact that it contains caffeine. Therefore, people with insomnia should avoid drinking green tea before going to bed.

Although it is classified under caffeinated drinks, green tea contains less caffeine than coffee. There is approximately 30 to 60 mg of caffeine in 6 to 8 ounces of tea, compared to over 100 mg in 8 ounces of coffee.

Harmful Effects of Drinking Green Tea

However, there are certain precautions to be taken while drinking green tea. These are:

  • Never take medications with green tea as it will reduce the effects of the medicines.
  • Drinking green tea on an empty stomach can sometimes cause nausea or heart palpitations.

  • Avoid drinking green tea when having phosphorus or calcium-rich seafood. The phosphorus or calcium from food and oxalate in tea may form calcium oxalate in the body.
  • People diagnosed with anemia should not drink green tea. The tannic acid in tea can combine with iron in foods into infusible tannic iron, impairing iron assimilation in the body.
