Side Effect
The recreational drug N-benzylpiperazine can cause kidney damage.
Another drug that is used as a party pill is N-benzylpiperazine. It is available in pills like A2, Nemesis, Frenzy, Charge Herbal, Black Pepper Extract, Herbal Ecstasy, Good Stuff and Legal X. It makes the recipient euphoric, full of energy with a desire to socialize. But a high dose can even lead to kidney damage and should be watched for.
The side effects of N-benzylpiperazine are described below:
Nervous system: Serotonin syndrome can occur in patients taking N-benzylpiperazine. It is one of the most serious adverse effects seen with this drug. The person experiences mental changes like confusion, agitation, lethargy and coma. In addition, the patient may also show tremors, increase in muscle tone and increased reflexes. Other symptoms include increase in sweating, heart rate, temperature, blood pressure, vomiting and diarrhea. Other symptoms include seizures, bleeding in the brain, jerking, abnormal movements and delirium.
Heart and blood vessels: N-benzylpiperazine can cause an increase in the heart rate, abnormal heart rhythm or symptoms of angina or a heart attack.
Fluid and electrolytes: N-benzylpiperazine can affect the fluid and electrolyte balance in the body resulting in low sodium and high potassium levels, dehydration and acidosis. Dehydration occurs due to increased sweating, temperature, increased physical activity, faster breathing and depletion of body fluids.
Lungs: Lung function may be reduced. Fluid accumulation in the lungs may occur in some cases.
Muscles: Muscle damage may occur. The products released from the damaged muscle are excreted via the kidneys and can cause kidney damage.
Digestive tract: Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea may occur. Liver may also be damaged.
Kidney: Urine retention may be seen due to an increase in the bladder tone. Kidney damage may occur even resulting in kidney failure in some cases. A recent study documented two cases of kidney damage due to N-benzylpiperazine use.
Recreational drugs are multiple and not entirely safe. They can cause serious adverse effects and also lead to death. The user should be aware of this fact before trying out any of these drugs.
