Atherectomy

Atherectomy - Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Which specialist should I consult for undergoing an atherectomy?

You should consult a cardiologist or a vascular surgeon.

2. What happens during a cardiac catheterization?

During a cardiac catheterization a thin long flexible tube is passed into a peripheral blood vessel and guided to the heart. During this procedure, several procedures may be performed such as an angiography to image the coronary vessels or an angioplasty to open up a block in the coronary arteries.

3. What is a stent used for?

A stent is commonly positioned inside the narrowed vessel following an angioplasty to keep the vessel open. Its use depends on the size of the vessel and the site of the block.

4. What is the difference between balloon angioplasty and atherectomy?

In a balloon angioplasty, a balloon is inflated within the narrowed vessel and the plaque is compressed against the vessel wall. In atherectomy, the plaque is cut away or ground and removed.
