2. What is TURP?

TURP or transurethral resection of the prostate is a procedure where an instrument is introduced through the urethra to cut a part of the prostate. It is usually used to treat benign prostate enlargement but may also be used sometimes to treat urinary obstruction caused by prostate cancer.

3. What are the other treatments available for prostate cancer?

Treatments for prostate cancer often depend on patient characteristics and the stage of the cancer. Older patients may only be followed up, but may not need treatment unless symptoms occur. Beside surgery, the following treatments are also available for prostate cancer:
  • Radiation treatment, using external radiation, internal radiation using radiation-emitting seeds, needles, or injecting a radioactive substance into a vein
  • Hormonal treatment, using hormones that prevent growth of cancer cells
  • Chemotherapy medications
  • Biological treatment like Sipuleucel-T which stimulates the immune system to fight the cancer

4. What is the incidence of incontinence after radical prostatectomy?

Generally it is less than 10%. However at 3 months almost 20% patients may require to wear pads. This incidence has improved with better surgical techniques. A younger patient has better continence than older patient who are over 70 years of age.

5. What is a decipher test?

Decipher test is a genomic test that can predict the risk of progression of the prostate cancer, after the patient has had prostate surgery. It can help the doctor decide on the future course of treatment. More information on the test is available at the following link:

6. How long will it take to regain my potency after such a surgery?

It is best to discuss this issue with the surgeon in advance. 3 to 6 months is not unusual before you get some potency. Medication may also help if required.

7. Can I have children after this surgery?

No this is not going to be possible as you will have no sperm output or an ejaculate.
