Vasovasostomy, or vasectomy reversal, is possible and is becoming increasingly popular among modern couples
It is important for the couple to come to a common consensus regarding vasectomy and realize that it should not be thought of as a reversible procedure. Nevertheless, with increasing divorce and remarriage rates, vasectomy reversal (referred to as Vasovasostomy) is becoming increasingly popular. In cases where the marriage is stable, clearly the desire for more children or the loss of a child is what prompts the man to present for vasectomy reversal, which is technically very difficult and associated with poor success rates. It has been projected that 2-6% of vasectomised men would seek reversal, sometime later in life.
Success of a vasectomy reversal depends on factors such as:
- The length of time elapsed since vasectomy procedure
- The technique used for vasectomy
Sometimes, even in the best hands, fertility may not be restored. The general success can be predicted to be between 20 to 30%.
