Glossary

Allergies: These are hypersensitivity disorders of the immune system.

Allergic rhinitis: Inflammation of the nasal mucus membranes due to allergy to a particular substance like dust, pollen, animal dander or food.

Antihistamines: A class of drugs prescribed in allergic conditions.

Antritis: Inflammation of maxillary sinuses.

CT Scan: Computerized tomography uses X – rays and a computer to generate detailed images of the inside of the body.

Endoscopic sinus surgery: It is a surgical procedure to treat conditions like nasal polyps or chronic sinusitis without cutting the skin. It is done by using nasal endoscopes.

MRI Scan: Magnetic resonance imaging technique is used to produce high-resolution images with minute details using radiowaves, magnetism and computer.

NSAIDs: These are non-steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs which provide analgesia, serve as antipyretics and anti- inflammatory agents.

Nasal irrigation: Also called as nasal lavage or nasal douche. It is a method to flush out excess mucus and debris from the nose and sinuses using water.

PET Scan: This is done by injecting a radioactive substance into the patients body to obtain images of the organs affected by cancer.

Rhinitis: It is the inflammation of the mucus membranes inside the nose.

Rhinoplasty: It is the surgical correction to restore the function of the nose and its appearance.

Sinusitis: It is the inflammation of the paranasal, frontal, ethmoid and maxillary sinuses.
